She's feverishly typing and there's all kind of autocorrect #FAILS.

The issue, her Facebook page and Fanpage were being hacked, at that moment. Within a matter of hours she watched as her page was taken over, closed and subsequently locked!!
It was detrimental, at least to her. She wanted to make a call, send an email, and (of course) cry.
On a Sunday, Facebook is kinda hard to get in touch with, who'd a thunk it!?

As a small business owner, with a brick and mortar business, she ran her entire life and business contact list on Facebook, posting pictures of her work, accepting appointments and reaching out to other nail techs across the country. (check out GlamNailz by Chloe)

Which leads me to the reason of this post.
What would you do if Facebook disappeared? Not if it never were invented, but if one second you were LIKEing pics and posts and then one second you weren't.

Would you be able to live without knowing everything your high school best-friend was doing? Would your children have a hobby to fall back on? Would you know about all of the new Jordan sneakers that are coming out (again)?

This past weekend I decided to go through my social networks, like LinkedIn and Twitter, and pull off emails of folks I know (or knew). I had a goal of updating my contact list, reaching out to my network and launching a few new projects with people that were "already in my circle". Mind you, I usually collect and then covet my followers and friends, oftentimes never really reaching out to them, but isn't that what these networks are about? Making connections, scratching backs and ultimately getting a good rub down yourself (wait, that came out wrong, but I'll roll with it).

As I personally phished through LinkedIn, Twitter (all three accounts) and Google+ I noticed just how many "new" people I'd become acquainted with via social media. Most of them I had only known through the internet, only to meet them in person and feel like old friends.

Hell, I met my husband on Twitter! And being new to San Antonio, I've contacted and been reached by a ton of small business owners, bloggers and clients via LinkedIn and Google+.

Facebook and other sites built around the same social construct (the construct that it's not who you know, but on which network you meet them) have drawn multiple industry professionals to the flare of being recruited to a Fortune 500 company, getting a record deal, launching their products on The Oprah Winfrey Network, or maybe becoming a world-renowned fashion model.

But, what if all of that was taken away from us? Would everyone's life still be "perfect", "blessed" and "highly favored"? Would you still actively involve yourself in conversations with complete strangers? Would Kodak still be in business (getting film developed use to be such fun)?

What would you do if Facebook disappeared?
I'll wait...
<g:plusone></g:plusone>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06980431556091449347noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8075683067031770902.post-19127095855268799572012-06-25T09:00:00.000-05:002012-06-25T09:00:10.987-05:00The Great Give Back - #TeamOgba volunteersOne of the first things we decided to publicly do as a small business was volunteer. The opportunity came up to run a 5k for a local charity ... I declined, I really ain't about running. But something I do love is cleaning, it's something my dad instilled in me. When we first saw the posting on Facebook from the San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation for volunteers to clean up a home in an historic neighborhood, I jumped at the opportunity to help out.

Now, since being in TEXAS I've become a beer drinker, booty short wearer (just'once), bling-bling needer and margarita maker ... never have I been a place where being happy and comfy is so widely accepted,<strike> y'all know I'm from Detroit</strike>. Working with the ladies at the Foundation was extremely easy and fun... the hubby (@MrOgba) and I had a blast at the event, especially trying all of the many (many many many many) martinis!

I completely apologize to my regular readers for not keeping you posted the last month (or longer) but I have been so very busy.

My wedding and subsequent honeymoon have not been as fairy-tale as I've dreamed. I have learned so much about matrimony, business and Texas ... and I honestly couldn't be happier.

The Black In the City blog has always been about understanding where you fit in among the "City" and everything the city holds and I think it's time to revamp what it is that I am going to focus on, especially since I am building my family and business here in a City with so little like me.

Make sure you visit my new website, BethanyEastPR.com.

I look forward to further figuring out where this blog is going and what I am going to feature. If you have any input please share.

Spring is here and I been waiting on going shopping for some new lighter, more colorful pieces. It's been a weird winter, my first here in San Antonio, and I am trying to transition some of my warm options that I've accumulated while here.

And with spring cleaning, and fixing up around my new apartment search, my new website launch (BethanyEastPR.com), starting a few new projects and getting use to married life I have also started a cute little workout plan.

Just yesterday I did a #twitpictour of my daily 6 mile trek from my home to downtown San Antonio. I went all along the Riverwalk and rocked out to #iHeartRadio. I have a body goal that I probably should have started 6 months ago, but I didn't and now I am nervous, anxious and partially starving.

As you may know, sampling/freebie campaigns have been known to create instant consumer loyalty towards a brand as well as dual-exposure with the advent of social media, fashion vlogging and media sharing (Facebook pics, Tumblrs, Instagram and other pic/vid platforms).

Aside from playing every single role in my business, from promoting to bookkeeping to sales, being open to suggestions and doing research on key tools is a never ending task.

If you are just starting out as an entrepreneur, or if you are a weathered industry member I have compiled a few important and useful sites, products or services that hopefully will interest you.

1.) Elance.com -

When I first set off doing freelance copywriting and public relations I only found clients through recommendation (word-of-mouth) ... but then I ran into issues of the infamous "hook up". I am not in the business of "hooking-up" (I call it working for free) my friends' friends, so other than clearly stating to whomever I work with that I do this for a living and therefore stand to get paid my entire fee, I found Elance.com.

This site allows you to post, search and apply for freelance/contracting gigs. It's completely free to use and they make precautions to ensure that you get paid. The Elance University option helps you declare your skills, that means, you don't have to go threw that "training period" of "let me see what you can do, then I'll pay you." .. Best part of it, IT'S FREE!

Looking for work? Sign up for a provider membership on Elance and find great clients today!

2.) Caseable.com

I belong to the Coffee Shop Career Group here in San Antonio ... My neighborhood shop, The Foundry on McCoullough, is my favorite place to get work done, meet new people and drink endless cups of caffeine. I also use this place to see what's new when it comes to cool entrepreneur toys. And in 2012 having the perfect statement case is all the rave. Caseable.com is a cool site whereas you can create a purchase customized iPad, smartphone, and even journal cases. I just ordered mine (post coming soon), and I am sure that my clients would get a kick out of the classic corporate yet funky design I've chosen. Are you focused on building a recognizable brand? You can even upload your personal logo to your case. Do you have an entrepreneur friend with a birthday coming up, these make perfect custom gifts.

3.) Car Mount

Gone are the days where you could even hold your phone in your hand while driving.

Which is weird because I need Google Navigator whenever I go anywhere (being/getting lost is not cool and can get really expensive). So, I went out and nerded up the Mazda with a shiney new, ultra necessary, car mount for the brand new Samsung Galaxy SII my hubby got me for Christmas. These also help if you are tired of losing your found to that irritating crevice between the seats (of the car...lol). It keeps my phone (and iPod) in my line of vision so I can see maps, easily hit the speakerphone option (I have an '04, so I'm not privy to "sync technology") and listen for directions without having to hold my phone. You can get a really good car mount at Sears.com. And they are easy to install.

4.) Looking Good, Feeling Good

Everybody knows you do better when you feel better and you feel better when you look good. But as entrepreneurs we know that looking good is a task when you're on a strict budget.

Hince, one of everyone's favorite stores, TARGET!!! I love me some Tar-jay...and with all of the new clothing designers infiltrating the stores shelves, I can't wait to see what they come up with next. From long flowy maxi dresses, to gladiator sandals, to a perfect blazer .. and you know what, even their heels are cute and comfortable. The new Jason Wu line is amazing as well.

For my readers, THIS WEEK ONLY, Target is offering 25% OFF ALL CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES .. the site is already boasting 15% savings when you spend more than $125.

This summer I am going to live in dresses. I love a good summer dress that I can throw a blazer over. And for the fellas, think fitted (not skinny!!) jeans, colorful socks and manly accessories.

5.) Putting On Your (businesses) Face!

Every small business these days, whether social, retail, product or service based is creating their "brand" .. This week I was able to moderate a conversation via Twitter (follow my business @BethanyEastPR). The Twitter chat was centered around morality and branding!!

First thing to do when determining and promoting your brands direction is your logo. MycroBurst.com offers some great options and inexpensive deals on logos for businesses. I mean, there are actually people that don't know about it...and it amazes me.

I completely enjoyed the satire of it all, as well as the method it commercialized itself. But, just as hipsters and nerds alike loyally trust Jon Stewart's commentary of news more so than @CNN, America's Most Watched News Source (they said it, not me) ..

*in this case I think it's cool if you substitute for S. Colbert, they both the same.

Then I know that this show will go down in the books as a valuable index of how white folks can* think and learn about blackness. I mean, not ALL of the sketches were about "blackness" ... they however, make major claims in the hosting part.

So all in all, it's a pretty funny show. I know @MrOgba thought the "My Wife is a B@#$H" sketch was lol hilarious!... (me and him had a lil talk afterward ... it started with "if you eva'")

I especially liked the Barack Obama-sketch .. if you missed it on Comedy Central, then check it out here

This is supposed to be my Black History Month-post. In recent years I've written about the King, had a few X's, and even swang my hair back and forth with a "Natural Sista's" post (how cliche... like we don't already get enough of ourselves)

But this year Black History feels different. I am getting the chance to learn newer histories about my different heritages. And although I reverence those people in our past that have created opportunities for my collective and entire race, there need be some changes in how Black History Month is going to be viewed in the far future.

Are we always going to remember slavery as

I think we need to think of how 2013 (plan ahead) is going to look like "in the books". ... what capital gains are we shooting for ... will there ever be a time when we'll say

"you know what, we've remembered the Civil Rights Movement, the Bus Boycotts, the Four Little Girls the lynchings, Vietnam, the glass ceilings ...and slavery, for long enough. Let's cut that out." and then boom ...

no more Symposiums,

no more museum exhibitions ...

there wouldn't even be any more new high schools named after MLK.

(although I don't think there could possibly be anymore room for another King HS...unless*)

... in 400 years (GODwilling) What would be the legacy WE leave behind?

I understand that right now it seems as if we are still getting some "first" out of the way, but it's important to think about what's next for us, how do we proceed in building more history,

I mean who doesn't get openly surprised when we realize that someone does something, albeit outside of our racial comfort zone, and is recognized for it... (how did u react when you found out the NY sniper was black .. and when OJ got off (the first time) ...or when Octavia Spencer won her SAG Award (s/o, #luvher).

To start the conversation ...

What are we fighting for RIGHT NOW, COLLECTIVELY, as a race that if/when we claim victory would be a momentous occasion!?

I know we got our POTUS, but let's think about the gap between accomplishments outlive us.

Just a heads up, whereas I loved my old URL, and I love my hometown (Detroit CITTTTTTTYYYYY), I had to grow up the #BlackInTheCity blog a lil' bit ... the new URL is

BlackCityBlog.Blogspot.com

Add it to your favories, change your RSS feed list, ... do what you have to do, but there is no more BlackCity313, sorry about the confusion.

If you follow me on twitter or have ever met me, you know that I am a Daddy's girl, tried and true. I hold my father as one of my top references in arguments, research papers, lifestyle decisions and jokes.

Today is my dad's birthday and I wanted to share a few options with everyone on gifts that dads would love. Gone are the days when a new tie or a shiney new Bible cover would suffice, dads are doing more and deserve more ... especially the best Dads, like mine.

The first rule of Gift Giving For Dad is ...

1. Remember what it is they like to do. Yes, all dads have passtimes and hobbies, but sometimes we (as Daddy's Girls) don't recognize that they do other things but cater to us all day.
I often regarded my dad's lifetime supply of wood scraps, nails and tools as "the crap we keep in the backyard" until I found out that that "crap" kept food on our table for 18 years.
Speaking of food .. I DO KNOW that my dad loves to cook! So, instead of adding to the pile of crap in the backyard, an apron would be a great idea for a gift. Because it makes everyone happy, Dad gets something new and I get to watch him twirl around the kitchen in it while he whips me up my favorite meal ... lasagna.

#2. Remember what you and your dad have been through together. A lady only gets awarded Daddy's Girl status after you've stood your ground. I am not going to admit to giving my father gray hairs ... I am not going to openly say that I may have made him cry a few times (more times than not those were tears of joy ...right?) But I am going to say that my Dad and I have had our ups and downs. He is, and he'd agree to this, my first boyfriend ... so yes, we faught, argued and battled over more than a few things. And in each instance, I like to think I made him better at what he does ... i.e. understanding me. (what did you think I was gonna say?) What better gift to show this off than a comical mug.

And lastly,

#3. Understand where your dad is coming from. My dad is hitting 70 years young, but he's still up with the times. I mean, as best as he can he's managed cell phones, wireless phones, speaker phones and even answering machines .. computers, not so much. He still drafts his emails on his typewriter (that wasn't a joke, I have proof) .. so when gift giving for dad, always remember their generations. You don't want to shock them into keeping up with the rest of the world, so an iPad is out of the question .. plus, all the Dads I know have the biggest hands in the world, I wouldn't even want to watch him manipulate the slide and sweep actions of Angry Birds. What better gift but a little bit of technology nostalgia ..think a good ol' (super unnecessary) customized mouse pad. I mean, there's no way that he would understand that mice have infrared technology and could be used on any surface now ... and I've been meaning to replace the one personalized with my 9th grade photo he's had for years (he leaves it around the house for literally everyone to see)

I couldn't be a happier woman at this point. Now, as I fling myself in between decisions for clients, writing press releases and proposals to planning a multi-national wedding. ...yes, I said multi-national. That's the only word I can find to describe it. If you haven't come to the conclusion now, @IgboSwag is Nigerian. And traditionally weddings are sacred instances of massive partying.

There's so much involved. So much to think about. And apparently, it has to be perfect.

Nevertheless, I like to take things a little slower these days, especially when I am planning events, or maybe its because I am obsessed with rings.

I don't remember alot about the married women I knew and their wedding ring situation. It wasn't until after college that I recognized that married black women's ring game was not up to par with those of other races. The first time I saw a girl my age wearing a gigantic rock was while working a small boutique in Birmingham. A young bride had come into the shoppe for the bridal registry, and her Tiffany set diamond caught my eye. It was beautifully set in platinum and had all the sparkle in the world and it completely ROCKED mine. Who was this man she was dating that could afford such a gift? Was he "old money"? Was he "old" in general? Definitely no young man would have the audacity to purchase something soo flashy ... right?
(Clearly I use to think that everyone had to be as broke as I was)

But that's when I found BlueNile.com ... it's diamond heaven. He was a fantastic man that the world has grown to truly appreciate, flaws and all.

I had the joy of attending the groundbreaking of his memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC about 5 years ago. It was an exciting experience and the people that were there had a community feeling of love and acceptance. And I treasure the moment spent with the likes of senators and tv personalities ... also, it was the last time I seen one of my best friends before she was killed by a drunk driver.
When I think of Dr. King I think of everything that black people, women, orphans, people with disabilities, foreign Americans, and everyone that has suffered. I think of the things that they've now accomplished after recognizing how to fight via Dr. King.

But I am sad because there aren't many stars that have risen to the occasion as King had. Who is leading our people? Where is that "voice" of reason when it comes to what battles we'll fight, or did we only learn to turn the other cheek ... and tweet anonymously, and crash a few computers, and sleep in a park ... where's the real action? The boycotts of big business? The picketing of discrimination for those men that Governor in Georgia pardoned ... would the country be in such an uproar if those men were white?

What I am saying, in the words of my most favorite Nina Simone, What has happened now that the King of Love is dead?
ofcourse, we have a black president ... but congress has yet to be infiltrated by minorities .. the senate too!
ofcousre, black boys are quarterbacks in the NFL ... but the NFL is owned by old white men who fine, yell at, starve and beat their high-priced (mostly) players ... same thing for the NCAA.
there maybe, free share of information across the board, but access to that information is limited in low income areas where libraries and public schools don't get the same amount of funding as their suburban counterparts ...
Are we still moving for the equality that Dr. King preached for? Or have we settled for iPhones and tax refund checks? Have they quieted our cries with free apps like twitter when gas prices are exuberant?

I know we aren't happy. but...
Relying on introductions can be #TheWorst. As a business person, neighbor, or just wanna buy a girl a drink you naturally want people to see you in a good light ... that is if you're like me.

As a marketer and publicist I find myself reaching out to people on a daily basis. And I love when I get in touch with just the right person the first time-around ("Never Take a NO", new post coming soon).

I hate, however, when I have to go through other people to make a contact. It requires patience and confidence that whomever your reference is can properly communicate information about you ... excuse me, GOOD information about you.

I mean, you can't always trust what people say or how it comes out.

So, I was overjoyed when I found @WhoDoYouKnowAt ... its a site that (1) Locate the proper people and describe their relationship to you .. or (2) Allow you to build your own interactional (because you have to define this now, since everything internet is social, interactional is the congregation of actual people in a common place)
As you all may know, I love to get things out in the open. I like to speak my mind, and it really doesn't matter if anyone really hears me...but I know how to make people listen.

This new section that I am rolling out with this year is the BiTC.Homegirl Chronicles...and it's not just a play on letters, acronyms and words...this is going to get deep. This series will implement dynamic views of the black community, how I associate with news, legislature, pop culture, not-so-pop culture and the random direction our entire young American community is headed (those darn young wipper-snappers!)

Let's get this party poppin'!

San Antonio, TX (and sometimes Austin) is where I call home. But I am still a Detroiter, as you can see, half of my blog posts promote Detroit-based events. It is my native town that gave me this weird view of my world, whereas now it is the most segregated city in America, in history it was the city every negro slave risked their lives to. And now, living in Texas, I tell people about my Detroit roots and they give me the "glad you made it out" face... is it that serious?

I am not one to preach to the choir, but are we still on this "product of our environment" mess?

I am anxious to read what you have to say about how you've create new "not your average" opportunities in your realm, world, neighborhood or box. ... more to come from the Homegirl.
Putting an End to my BeginningHappy New Year Everyone!!

BiTC celebrated its FIFTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY yesterday ... and I never really cause a big fuss over it...I love my blog, but I don't really celebrate it like I should. Instead I like to think back on my posts and think how they can be better, a skill I learned at the end of every school year during finals...

I have been a freelance publicist for almost 2 years now. I've worked on campaigns in Detroit, San Antonio, Austin, Chicago and the DMV as well as completed tons of online campaigns. It's been a weird year.

When I last talked about my employment situation I had just been fired from Nordstroms for reasons unknown, other than being a cool headed black girl. .. I took my new-found forced independence in stride, vowing never to go back on the clock again. I created proposals for new events and drafted contracts with new clients. I hit the keyboard at 6am most mornings finding contacts in the media and focusing on gaining ground in the realm of B2B relations.
Part of being freelance is creating my own schedule as well as managing my own customer service methods. Which is often the hardest thing for new entrepreneurs. Of course every one imagines being able to roll out of bed whenever you want, billing large clients for exuberant amounts of "consulting" hours, networking and laughing it up with other entrepreneurs over a glass of red wine and a t-bone steak....but managing a service-centered small business is getting more and more complicated. Having 5 years of fresh corporate experience did not well enough prepare me for 2011, and neither did the 5 years I spent at Michigan (yup, I'm admitting to the 5th year victory lap...atleast I finished)
Whereas I have just gotten over the fear of "what if I can't pay my [insert life altering expense here]?" phase of being an entrepreneur...the phase where I find myself applying for a few open positions every now and then... to the "now, I demand a deposit before any services are begun." mindset of entrepreneurship.

In 2011 I focused a lot on finding the lessons I need to learn from ... or in my aunts' words, I got into a ton of trouble. I watched the reality/talent show a few times in seasons past but not nearly as much as this current season...all because of one of the most original talented lil' kids that I have ever seen.

The Astronomical Kid (aka Astro, aka CKO, coldest kid out) who hails Brooklyn, NYC blew audiences away with his lyrics, panache and humility. And he's only a tween!

But X-Factor didn't make this talent up. He's the product of years in the making, and a ton of hard work has gone into getting him to the top 3 in the reality show. His first video, Stop Looking at My Mom, has almost 500,000 hits on Youtube. He's ... well, Astronomical!

If you have never heard of Astro and are an aspiring rapper, a music lover or a just a fan of young fresh talent, I've posted a view videos.

Detroit's Northend community has been stricken with rumors of drug related crime, prostitution and bad property management. But one thing that I refuse to believe is that this neighborhood is home to child kidnappers and young men that hurt children. I know a lot of guys on the 'End, and they all have children, they may be a little down on their luck, but they are young fathers, they are cousins and half of them are hood educators.

Just yesterday a two-year old girl by the name of Bianca Jones was kidnapped-in-haste. Her father was carjacked and it just so happened that innocent Bianca was in the backseat. The car was found moments later, however, Bianca wasn't inside. An Amber Alert was issued all over Detroit (and hopefully Michigan). But after living on the 'End, walking three blocks a day down Hague St. to Woodward to catch my bus to go to Cass Tech, or walking to the cornerstore on Clay and Oakland I have never seen a more hidden community love. People from the 'End will stop a drug deal to tell some kids to quite playing in the street, they will halt a whole party to pull a blunt out the pregnant chicks hand (bare with me), these people understand right from wrong. I've seen momma's look down the barrels of guns pointed at their sons, I've seen young girls making ends meet to support their children, people have come and gone out of the 'End, but the experience still stays.
I hope the community bands together and talks to the police in efforts to find this poor little angel.
